Alex Kim and Ryan Nguyen advance to Vol 4 semi-finals at Saint Joseph’s Invitational
Villanova represented five of the eight spots in the third round of the Flight 4 draw and has seen some of their most competitive fall season games to date take place in that bracket. Kim and Nguyen each started the day beating opponents of Mary Washington in the second round before facing their own teammates in the third round. Kim won in straight sets against a classmate Will gatti (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) while Nguyen outlived his sophomore classmate Noah winton (Colombia, Missouri) in a three-part thriller. Among other results on Saturday was freshman Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, California) reach the semi-final of the Flight 2 singles draw.
The Saturday morning competition started with singles matches in the second round and Gatti and Kim scored some thrilling victories. Gatti passed host Hawks’ Alex MacNeil with a 6-1, 2-6, 10-5 decision and Kim fought off Mary Washington’s Cole Tecce for a narrow 7-6 (3), 7-5 win. Kim won the match against Gatti in the third round in a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Lower in the Vol 4 group, Nguyen opened the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Artis Hart of Mary Washington and Winton defeated Djordje Janackovic (Drexel) in a tiebreaker to post a 6- 3, 1-6, 10 -5 win. It’s no surprise that Nguyen and Winton, two of the Wildcats’ up-and-coming youngsters, fight until the last point of their third-round game. Each of the first two sets resulted in a tiebreaker before Nguyen won a decisive third set to close a result of 7-6 (2), 6-7 (4), 10-5.
The Flight 4 draw semifinals begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with Kim taking on Lehigh’s Jeremy Learner and Nguyen taking on fellow Mountain Hawks opponent Michael Bukhalo. The championship game is scheduled for noon on the Maguire courts.
Junior Daniel cheng (Los Angeles, California) got a first-round pass in Flight 4 on Friday, but started their weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mary Washington’s Andrew Cooper in a second-round game on Saturday morning. He fell to Learner in the third round in a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Senior Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) was a two-time winner on Saturday as he picked up two wins in the Vol 3 draw. Jones defeated Morgan State’s Rhajzon Rankins (8-6) and Drexel’s Juan Manuel Sanchez (9-8 ) to reach the consolation final. His opponent for a 12-hour game on Sunday has yet to be determined.
Jones and second Josh robinson (Potomac, Maryland) are still alive in the main draw of Vol 1 in doubles. They won a first-round match on Friday before having a second-round forfeit on Saturday. The pair will face Morgan State’s Mikeal Carpenter and Rhajzon Rankins, the doubles seed in the overall standings of this weekend’s tournament, in a semifinal match on Sunday at Maguire Courts. The time of the match has not yet been determined and will be played when a court becomes available.
Below are Villanova’s full results from Saturday’s games and the Wildcats competition schedule for Sunday.
