Altamont Senior National Merit Scholarship
Hannah Ashraf, senior from Altamont, was recently awarded a $ 2,500 National Merit Scholarship. Earlier this spring, Ashraf, Lilla Carroll, Robert Pritchard, Tyler Walley and Maaz Zuberi were recognized as finalists for National Merit.
Those nominated by Merit Scholar were chosen from a talent pool of over 15,000 outstanding finalists under the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. The winners of the $ 2,500 National Merit Scholarships are the finalists from each state judged. to have the best combination of achievement, skill and potential for success in a rigorous college education. The number of named winners in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of high school completers.
These researchers were selected by a committee of admissions officers and high school advisers, who assessed a substantial amount of information submitted by the finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including the level of difficulty of the subjects studied and the marks obtained; scores of two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
This year’s National Merit Scholarship Program began in October 2019 when over 1.6 million juniors in approximately 22,000 high schools took the SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualification Preliminary Test (PSAT / NMSQT®), which served as the initial selection of program participants. Last fall, the highest-rated participants in each state, representing less than 1% of high school students nationwide, were named semi-finalists on a representative state basis. Only these 16,000 semi-finalists had the opportunity to continue in the competition. From the group of semi-finalists, some 15,000 students have met very high academic standards and other requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. By the end of the 2021 program, approximately 7,500 finalists will have obtained the title of âMerit Scholarâ and received a total of over $ 31 million in college scholarships.
