Four-Star Quarterback Rookie Details Tour with Gamecocks
Quarterback Dante Reno’s four-star class of 2024 was in Colombia late last week visiting with the South Carolina football program.
State caught up with the 6-foot-1, 215-pound Massachusetts native to discuss how it went and where South Carolina stands in its recruiting process.
Reno’s comments have been lightly edited for clarity and brevity.
I know you were in Colombia for three days, how was it and what did you do?
Reno: “The first day we got there and I hung out with all the players Luke [Doty] and Spencer [Rattler] and I spent the night at Spencer’s with him and his roommate MarShawn [Lloyd]. So I hung out with them… Day two was camp, kicked off with Coach Satterfield, and then we hung out with the players again at the facility. And then we watched their little practice that they have at night with the guys… Day three we just hung out, they had another day of camp and I really hung out with Coach Beamer all day. I just looked at a few guys, Mazeo Bennett, Kam Pringle and Josiah Thompson who were there and there are a few other D-line players who were there as well. So I just hung out with these guys and spent time with them.
What was it like being with Doty and Rattler?
Reno: “It was great. It was just cool to see how – because my biggest thing was seeing how I fit in with these guys – and these guys are a lot like me. Spencer is one of greatest quarterbacks in college football right now and Luke is a great guy and he obviously had an amazing season last year until he got injured… So just those two guys just being around them, being around the whole quarterback room to be honest like coach Zeb Noland, Nick Coleman was also a quarterback coach in that room and coach (Freddie) Kitchens too It was a great experience for me and my family. “
Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield was very involved in your recruitment and you asked him the other day, what is your relationship with him?
Reno: “I mean with Satt it’s a bit more than football. He’s done an amazing job, recruiting me and not just me, my whole family. He’s very close to me and my brother, my sister, my mom, my dad, and he knows everything about me and my family. And we know everything about him and his family, so I got to meet his family while I was there. Obviously, that’s a family first guy and he really loves building relationships. I think that’s kind of where Coach Beamer comes from and obviously what he’s trying to build there. Coach Satt is a great guy and he does a great job.
Fellow four-star and Class of 2024 quarterback Jayden Bradford was at camp the same day as you. What was it like working alongside another guy in your class who is also heavily recruited? Was there a mutual understanding of, “Hey, we’re both trying to hang out here,” or was it some kind of healthy competition?
Reno: “It was cool. He’s great, he’s a really good player and we’ve been to a Rivals camp before or something…I think it was last summer. He’s obviously a great boy and he’s from there too… We talked to each other, we practiced on stuff and after one of us had a good pass we congratulated each other for that. He’s a great boy, obviously we we’re both striving to play Division I college football somewhere I mean for him and me I mean it won’t be the same college But it was pretty cool to see how he operates and meet his family. And they’re all great people, so it was a good time.
Where is South Carolina after the past few days?
Reno: “It’s definitely up there. There’s a lot going on in the next two months, from July to August. So I think it’s going to be pretty interesting to see, but I have a pretty good idea of South Carolina and where they are right now… They’re definitely top three.
Obviously, you have another year of high school coming up, so you have some time, but what does your ideal commitment schedule look like?
Reno: “I mean, probably by the end of the summer, to be honest with you. Either at the end of the summer or before my season at some point. It’s kind of the time when I plan it.
There have been rumors and reports about your potential reclassification, is there any truth to that?
Reno: “Yeah, right now, there’s no truth to that…I mean, that might change in the next two months.” But right now your answer is that there is no truth to it.
Is there anything else you think fans need to know about your time in South Carolina or just your recruiting status?
Reno: “Obviously it’s always a good time when I’m in Colombia. I feel like they are all part of my family and they did a great job recruiting me. Coach Beamer has something awesome there. He has a bunch of good people around him. I think the fans should be very excited about what’s going to happen in the next two months and obviously for South Carolina going into the next football season.
