Keller named MAC Female Athlete of the Week
CLEVELAND – Katie keller from Northern Illinois University’s softball team has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Female Athlete of the Week, the league office said Friday.
A biology graduate with a 4.0 grade point average, Keller earned her most recent honor after coaching the NIU plate softball team in six starts last week and setting an academic record in the process.
The Junior Huskie hit .563 with a .813 hitting percentage and had the team’s nine best hits this week, including four doubles. She set the one-season mark at NIU for the doubles at 23, setting the record with a pair of doubles as part of a 3-for-3 performance in the series opener with Miami, breaking the brand she had established two years ago. Keller, who took top honors in all regions, was 3 for 3, including a double, with two runs batted in and one run scored in Game 3 with the RedHawks. In addition to his nine hits, Keller persuaded three marches and was a perfect 2-for-2 on stolen bases.
The Geneva, Ill. Native also won All-MAC First Team accolades, the Nan Harvey Award and a spot on the MAC All-Defensive Team as the league announced its awards after -season Thursday.
Keller is the second Huskie to win the MAC varsity athlete honors as male soccer player Enrique Banuelos, who won the MAC male athlete of the week award on April 8.
