Holders of a provisional licence, beware, it is indeed possible to accumulate points on your license before becoming a full-fledged driver.

As long as you have acquired less than 11 points, you will still be able to pass your test.

However, the points are transferred to your full license upon successful completion, so be sure to keep those learning mistakes to a minimum.

According to insurance company Veygo, 74,104 provisional license holders had points in April 2021, of which 1,383 had more than 10.

Nevertheless, there are simple ways for learner drivers to keep their licenses clean.

If your car is uninsured as a learner, you face a fixed fine of £300 plus six penalty points added to your licence.

In the most serious cases, the police can seize your vehicle and, if the matter goes to court, you could face an unlimited fine or even a temporary driving ban.

So, despite the high price for beginners, you should immediately insure yourself.

You also need to make sure your L-plates are displayed correctly or you could be breaking the law.

In order to be on the safe side, it is best to obtain two 178mm x 178mm plates and place one at the front of your vehicle and the other at the rear; this will ensure that your plates are the right size and in the right place.

To complicate matters further, you need to buy them from a legitimate retailer as there are specific dimensions for the red letter L itself.

Failure to follow these guidelines could result in fines of up to £200 and six points on your licence.

In 2019, the teenager was caught stopping over the line at a traffic light by an automatic camera.

There were no oncoming cars or pedestrians but he was fined £100 and three points on his provisional licence, reports the Sun.

He fought the punishment in court, where he was granted an absolute discharge, but other Learners may not be so lucky.

His instructor, who had dual control of the vehicle, was not prosecuted, sparking a conversation about whether teachers should face some form of punishment for learner mistakes.
