Louisville mayoral candidate targeted in shooting at campaign headquarters, authorities say
Democrat Craig Greenberg was the target of the shooting in the Butchertown neighborhood, said Erika Shields, chief of the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department, adding that while there were no injuries in the incident, a bullet appeared to hit Greenberg’s clothing.
Quintez Brown, 21, has been charged with attempted murder and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment in connection with the shooting, according to Elizabeth Ruoff, public information officer for the Louisville Metro Police Department.
CNN was unable to determine whether Brown obtained an attorney.
Shields said earlier Monday that authorities had “no known motive at this time”, adding, “We also have no reason to believe at this time that this individual was acting other than alone.”
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are helping local law enforcement investigate the incident, agency spokespersons told CNN.
Tim Beam, an FBI spokesman, also confirmed that FBI agents responded to the scene. Beam said the FBI is working to determine if any federal crimes took place during the attempted shooting.
ATF spokeswoman Cassandra Mullins confirmed the agency is helping Louisville Metro Police respond to the incident, which began after 911 calls were made about an ‘active assailant’. .
Greenberg, describing the shooting at an afternoon press conference, said that “a man walked into our office. When we greeted him, he pulled out a gun, aimed directly at me and started shooting. The individual closest to the door managed to bravely get the door closed. We barricaded the door and the suspect fled.
Virginia Woodward, chairwoman of the Louisville Jefferson County Democratic Party, said Monday that her offices were aware of the shooting and that they “hoped it was just a random incident.”
“I have spoken with Craig and am grateful that he is physically unharmed. Violence is never the answer,” he continued.
