New awareness campaign promotes scholarships for community college students
Statewide awareness campaign called ‘Time for a New YOU’ launched this week for the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund
RALEIGH – A statewide awareness campaign called ‘Time for a New YOU’ was launched this week for the Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund (GEER) which is available to eligible college students communities of North Carolina. GEER provides $ 15 million in tuition assistance for students enrolled in short-term vocational programs at one of North Carolina’s “Great 58” community colleges.
Short-term scholarship-supported programs are in high demand areas that will lead to a state or industry recognized degree. Ten high demand areas have been identified and are Automotive, Construction, Emergency Medical Services, Healthcare, Information Technology, Aircraft Maintenance, Criminal Justice, Fire Services and relief, industry / manufacturing and transportation. Johnston Community College offers several qualifying programs.

Stith III, president of the NC Community College System. âOur community colleges provide affordable and accessible educational opportunities and produce graduates who are highly competitive candidates for employment.â
The scholarship awards up to $ 750, or the cost of the program – whichever is greater – and can be used to cover tuition, fees, books and supplies, accreditation tests, transportation, childcare and other attendance costs.
Eligible students must reside in North Carolina and be currently enrolled in an eligible continuing education program or course for a minimum of 96 hours.
