Notre Dame veteran receives football scholarship

Notre Dame added a scholarship receiver to the group of positions most in need of depth on the roster ahead of the 2022 football season.

Well, they gave a scholarship to a player who’s been wearing blue and gold for a while now in Matt Salerno. Salerno served as Notre Dame’s punt returner in 2020 before Kyren Williams took over last season. Salerno also played this role in the Fiesta Bowl as Williams did not participate in that contest.

Salerno has contributed in part to special teams in 2021, returning a pair of kickoffs in the Navy game for 33 yards while also catching a pass this year for a loss of four yards.

Salerno will be a fifth-year senior in 2022, making him the third such receiver on the roster, joining Joe Wilkins and Braden Lenzy.

It’s not even technically an add-on, but it’s always exciting to see a member of the Walk-On Players Union (WOPU) being rewarded for their endless efforts throughout their career.
