Renegades with a 4th consecutive game, get ready for the CCSSL tournament
ROCKINGHAM – Landon Taylor was called to the mound and home plate in Richmond’s regular season finale on Thursday.
Hosting Southern Lee, the Renegades cruised to a 10-2 win and extended their season winning streak to four games.
Taylor’s left-hand delivery knocked Southern Lee’s batters off balance, as he pitched 4.0 innings for the win. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and struck out a batter.
Richmond used two relief pitchers, starting with Allen Taylor in the fifth and sixth frames. He worked on a base-loaded jam in both innings and didn’t allow a run, allowed two hits and had four strikeouts.
Ethan Locklear held the final inning, facing four batters and outing the team in order via the punch after a teeing error.
Trailing 2-1 after the first three and a half innings, the Renegades dotted the scoreboard with five runs in the fourth and another four in the fifth to break it.
Landon Taylor sat Southern Lee in the order through the first two innings and scored Richmond’s first run in the top of the second.
A first left hit, one of Taylor’s three hits, saw him reach base. He stole second, moved to third on a sacrificial bunt from Jason Walker and scored on a passed fly ball.
Richmond threw a double play to keep Southern Lee scoreless in the third, but a two-RBI single with two outs in the fourth gave the visitors the lead.
Quickly nullifying the lead, Richmond responded with their game-scoring round. Locklear started the home half with a left single, stole second and advanced to third and scored after a pair of errors.
Three at-bats later, Taylor scored on another passed fly after his double with one out to right field to give the Renegades a 3-2 lead.
The other three points all came with two out, starting with Zane Searcy (walking) scoring after a walk to Walker.
Allen Taylor tied on walks to place two runners, and Walker scored on a double steal when courtesy runner Jullian Cline slid to second base.
Cline also scored on a stolen home plate, making it 6-2 going into the fifth.
An inning later, a walk to Ethan Clayton, one of 10 shot by Richmond, and singles from Isaac Hinshaw and Landon Taylor charged the bases with one out. Cline recorded an RBI when he dug in on a short-range defenseman pick, scoring Clayton.
Hinshaw scored on another ball passed by a Southern Lee pitcher and Walker led Cline with an RBI single to right field.
The Renegades’ last run came when Searcy (walking) scored on a wild throw to the backstop.
Ashton Phifer added a hit in the win and Searcy’s three walks provided two runs scored. Cline and Landon Taylor also scored twice.
The Renegades finished the regular season with an 8-2 record and will ride a season-long four-game winning streak in the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League playoff tournament next week.
Head coach Rob Ransom said the tournament will be played at Fuquay-Varina High School, with Richmond set to play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (opponent TBD).
If the Renegades win, they will play for the CCSSL Championship at 7 p.m.
