The South Carolina men’s tennis team was involved in an accident Monday, the school said.

A university spokesperson confirmed to The State that the team was involved in a car accident while traveling to Raleigh, North Carolina in a van for a scheduled game with NC State which was scheduled for Tuesday.

South Carolina canceled the game at NC State “out of an abundance of caution and for the well-being of our student-athletes,” the school said in a statement. Information on a possible makeup date was not immediately available.

Details of the accident – including the time, location or any other information related to what happened – were not immediately available. The school spokesperson told The State the team was on its way back to Columbia on Monday night.

USC upset No. 10 Kentucky and No. 2 Stanford last week at the ITA Division I Men’s National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle.

South Carolina (11-2) is set to open Southeastern Conference competition Friday in Florida. It is unclear whether USC will play this game or not.

Ben Portnoy is the football beat writer for the in-state South Carolina Gamecocks. He is a five-time winner of the Associated Press Sports Editors Award and has been recognized by the Mississippi Press Association and the National Sports Media Association. Portnoy previously covered Mississippi State for the Columbus Commercial Dispatch and Indiana football for the Journal Gazette in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
