Willmar High School Senior Kessa Mara Wins Statewide Triple ‘A’ Award – West Central Tribune
WILLMAR — Willmar High School student Kessa Mara has been selected as the recipient of a 2022 Triple “A” Scholarship.
The Minnesota State High School League award recognizes high school students who have excelled in academics, arts/activities, and athletics. It was created in 1988.
Kessa has a GPA of 4.073 and is involved in band, choir, visual arts, tennis, volleyball, hockey and golf, according to League records. She plans to study biology in a pre-med program at Winona State University and play on the women’s golf team next year.
Each year, four students from across the state are chosen for the award after first being nominated by their schools and then chosen as finalists. One girl and one boy from each Class A and Class AA region are chosen as finalists. One girl and one boy from each class win $4,000 scholarships.
The winners were announced at a banquet and participated in an on-court recognition ceremony at the men’s basketball tournament last week.
To qualify for the award, students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and participate in League-sponsored sports and arts/activity programs. League member schools are invited to nominate a boy and a girl for the award. Award recipients are selected through a multi-tiered process involving the League’s administrative regions and a committee of education, sports and arts/activities officials.
Other 2022 winners are Connor Ginskey, Owatonna; Grace Moeller, Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial; and Isaac Scherfenberg, Battle Lake.
“We are proud to recognize and honor these accomplished students,” Lisa Lissimore, associate director of the League, said in a press release.
“They have demonstrated excellence, hard work and commitment in academics, arts/activities and sports and are leaders in their schools and communities,” said Lissimore, who oversees the Triple ‘A program. ‘.
More than 16,000 students have represented their school in the Triple “A” program, now in its 34th year. McDonald’s owner-operators are sponsoring this year’s program.
